John Heath-Stubbs (1918-2006)

the poet, essayist and critic was described in The Guardian by Michael Meyer as ‘by far the outstanding English Lit undergraduate of our time, unusually widely read and discerning – T.S. Eliot was later to call him the best critic of his generation.’ John Heath-Stubbs was awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 1973 and in 1989 was appointed OBE.
