Blake Morrison’s richly imaginative poems, dealing with the fear, jealousy and sensuality of the Pendle Witches folktale, are accompanied in this edition by images from a suite of etchings by Paula Rego.
Brutal yet delicate, disturbing but also tender, they show women in a variety of ages and guises. The culmination of images inspired by the poem, ‘Mist,’ is haunting and ambiguous – as only Rego’s work can be. Certainly, the disturbing and sad folktale of the witch trials in Pendle is perfect material for Rego. Consequently, this artwork is unique in its macabre retelling of this story.
The text has been designed and printed by Sebastian Carter of the Rampant Lions Press, Cambridge. It is hand-set in 18pt Palatino and printed on Arches vélin. The Fine Bindery bound this edition of 75 copies, which were each signed by Rego and Morrison. Rego’s signed original etching Him, which is laid into a wallet in the slipcase, has been printed on 300gsm Somerset at the Expression Printers Ltd.
